Between July 10, 1863 and July 21, 1922, sketched the earthly span of a useful and highly respected citizen of this community. David Marion Silver was born three miles northeast of Cantril, Van Buren County, Io., on the date first named, and passed away at his home three miles southeast of Cantril, on the second date. Mr. Silver was a son of David and Caroline L. McDonald Silver, who were of the hardy, rugged stock, characterized in the early development of the agricultural interests of this great state. His parents long since preceded him to the better land.
Mr. Silver’s life was spent in Van Buren County, with the exception of about two years, when a young man, he resided in the state of Nebraska.
On March 20, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Hopp, of Clark County, Mo. They began their happy married life on the farm three miles northeast of Cantril. One year later they moved to near Upton, and resided for four years on what is now known as the Albert Hopp farm. Mr. Silver then purchased the farm east of Niles, upon which they lived until about nine of the clock, when God came and said unto him, “Thy labors on earth are o’er,” his age being 59 years and 11 days.
He was of a family of eleven children, as follows: William, deceased; Harriet Stott, residing at Kansas City, Mo.; Albert A., of Ellis, Kan, Mary Johnston of Stockport, Iowa; George, deceased; Catharine E. Richardson, of Brownell, Kan.; Elizabeth Silver, deceased; John E., deceased; Jacob, of Wellington, Kan.; Joseph A., Stock, Iowa, and David Marion, the subject of this sketch.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Silver was blessed by the birth of one child, Mary Bertha, who is now the wife of Herbert Barnett, residing near Memphis, Mo. Mr. and Mrs. Barnett have two children, Clark Marion, and Veda Vivian.
Mr. Silver lived a life of industry, sobriety, and honesty. When a young man living in Nebraska, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He never united with any organized church, but was a regular attendant and supporter of the church. His upright, moral character won the respect and confidence of all who knew him. Socially he was identified with the Masonic Lodge, being a charter member of Apollo Lodge No. 461, Cantril, Iowa.
Mr. Silver possessed a strong physical body. But about four years ago he had a serious illness, and never fully regained his former health and vigor. His closest friends had for some time feared that he was suffering from some physical ailment, but they felt no alarm about it.
On Friday he had men employed putting the last of the hay crop in the barn. He was doing a little of the work connected with it. After supper he went to the mow, and was closing the large door when he was ov-(missing information)
