An Upright Citizen Passes to the Great
Beyond After a Long Illness

After a long illness, John M. Boyer passed away last evening at 7 o'clock at his residence, 817 High street. He had been ill for several months and his death resulted from a complication of disorders. While it was not unexpected it will cause the deepest sorrow among the many friends and associates who have been with him so long.

John M. Boyer was born July 26, 1840, nears Janesville, O. When quite young he came to Iowa and engaged in business in Bonaparte in Van Buren County. March 11, 1874, he removed to Farmington and formed a partnership with W. H. Bowman and conducted an establishment for the sale of agricultural implements. On November 1, 1882, the firm removed to Keokuk and have been here ever since. In 1894 the firm of Bowman & Boyer which reorganized under the name of the Bowman-Boyer Company, of which deceased was president until the time of his death. He served throughout the war as a member of Company A, Nineteenth Iowa infantry and was mustered out at the close of the war. Although greatly interested in all such movements, he never became a member of the G. A R. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Ora T. and Lou E and seven brothers and one sister.

He was a quiet and unassuming gentleman but he formed friendships of the deepest and truest nature. He won for himself success in his business and was honored by all for his uprightness and integrity of character. His family have the heartfelt sympathy of a large circle of friends and his death comes as a loss to the community of which he was an honored and valued citizen.

Arrangements for the funeral will be completed upon the arrival of relatives from out of the city. --Keokuk Gate City
