John D. Mitcheler was born in Butler County, Ohio, Jan. 9, 1818 and departed this life Oct. 15, 1898 having four score years in mortal existence.

In September 1842 he came to this county and in it he passed the remainder of his life. He served for four years as County Recorder and for two years as Deputy Sheriff.

He was united in marriage, Sept. 12, 1844, to Mary Bringham, who, after more than half a century of married life, remains to mourn the loss of her beloved companion. To them have been born six children: Levi J., William B., Anna, Samuel, Harry and Lizzie. Of them, but two, Samuel and Anna, (Mrs. G. H. Damron) survive. 7 grandchildren and one great grandchild are his other descendants.

Many years ago Mr. Mitcheler made a profession of his faith in Christ and united with the Presbyterian church of this place. He had realized for some time that his sojourn on earth would be short, and he was willing and eager to depart to the better world.

Religious services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. W. H. Scofield, at his residence Monday morning, after which occurred the interment in the Bonaparte Cemetery.
