Elmer Elsworth Hales, son of Thomas W. and Amanda Hales, was born in Mt. Sterling, Iowa in the year of 1870, Feb. 17 th. At the age of 18 years he moved with his parents to Macon Co, Mo. He attended school at College Mound, Mo. and graduated at that place.
He taught school for a short time and later was reporter for the “Macon Republican.” He moved to Atlanta, Mo. where he was married to Mary Brockman Plemmons in 1898 [August 17]. To this union were born two children, Mary D. [Delores]. and John B. [Brockman], the former having died when about two years of age [November 29, 1904 — September 21, 1906]. While in Atlanta he studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1901.
Brother Hales was converted, and united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Atlanta in 1896, and has ever lived a consistent christian life. About six years ago he went to Denver, Colorado, where he engaged in the real estate business. At that time and place he was taken ill and for many months was at the point of death; from his sickness he never fully recovered.
He returned to Atlanta and made a brave effort to regain his health and strength, but all in vain. Death came on Feb. 17, 1914, the 44 th anniversary of his birth He leaves an aged father, his wife and little boy John, four brothers and four sisters and a host of friends to mourn their loss.
