Died: — At her home, six and one half miles southeast of Keosauqua, in Vernon township, Van Buren Co., Iowa, on Tuesday evening, November 19, 1889, Mrs. Sarah J. Hales, aged 64 years, 5 months and 11 days.
The deceased, whose maiden name was Watson, was born in Manhattan [Manheim] Lancaster county, Penn., on the 8 th day of June 1825. On the 23 day of November she was married to Mr. Thomas Hales in Carroll county Ohio.
In the spring of 1864 she started to move to Iowa with her husband and children and on 8[th] of April of the same year, reached Vernon Prairie where she continued to reside until he day of her death. She was the mother of nine children, four sons and five daughters, all of whom with their father are living and remain behind to mourn their loss.
She was a loving wife, an affectionate mother, a kind neighbor, and a consistent earnest Christian woman. At the age of sixteen she gave her heart to Christ and become a member of Secedar [Seceder] church. Later in life having removed from the vicinity of the church of her first choice she united with the Presbyterian church in which communion she died.
She had suffered an unusual length of time from the effects of the disease which in the end proved fatal, yet no word of repining ever escaped her lips. The funeral took place from the Center Chapel M.E. church on Thursday the 21st at 11 o’clock A.M. and was largely attended by her neighbors and friends.
Six ladies near her own age acted as pallbearers. The Rev. C. W. Wilson, who by the request of the deceased preached from John xiv, 1-3.
I am Great-grandson Charles Eugene Hales; I offer these following comments and additions to this obituary recently discovered by Great-great granddaughter LuRee Carlson Runnells.
