Verne E. Roberts, son of Lawson and Etta M. Roberts was born April 17, 1889, two and a half miles north of Cantril, Jackson township, Van Buren county, Iowa.

On November 24, 1909, he was united in marriage to Miss Vera Lee Isenhour, of Jackson township. He and the girl of his choice lived in the same immediate community and were intimately acquainted from childhood.

They spent the first two years after marriage in Cantril where he had business interests. The following two years they were on a farm in the community, then one year was spent on a farm near Bentonsport.

Their marriage life was blessed by having two children born unto them. However, the first child, Freedah Lee, was not permitted to remain with them but a short time, for God wanted her, and took her to his home above. Mildred Irene, a bright darling child of seven years, is left an orphan as the mother, the companion of the deceased, preceded them to the better world, having passed away, January 25, 1916.

Four years ago, realizing that his health was failing him, he went to Colorado, thinking that the western climate would be beneficial. After spending several moths(sic), he returned, apparently much improved. Last year he was more conscious that disease was gnawing away at his physical strength, he again made a trip to Colorado; but of no avail. He returned to the old home, lovingly cared for by his loved ones, to await the final summons, which came Saturday afternoon, March 5, 1921, at 2:30 of the clock. Age 31 years, 10 months, 18 days.

He was a young man of clean habits, a graduate of the Cantril High School, and greatly beloved by all who knew him.

In his closing hours he expressed his faith in his Lord; and with a look of satisfaction on his countenance, he peaceful fell asleep.

He leaves besides the father and mother, one sister, Elva Marie, one child, Mildred Irene, a large circle of more distant relatives, and a multitude of friends.

Appropriate services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Cantril, Monday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. W. Cochran. Interment in Cantril cemetery.
