OBITUARY SKETCH.

The subject of this sketch was born in Montgomery county Virginia, May 7, 1840, and died in Vernon, Iowa, June 27, 1904, having reached the age of 64 years, 1 month and 20 days.

His early life was spent in farming until the war broke out and when the country demanded men he lay down the implements of farm life and entered the service. He enlisted in Co. F, 21st Reg. Missouri Inf. On June 8, 1861, and for over four years endured the hardships of soldier life. On April 19, 1866, he was discharged and returned to Iowa where the remainder of his life was spent.

Soon after his return home he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Green and to this union was given one son, Stephen R. Holmes of Keokuk. After Mrs. Holmes death he married Mrs. Anderson and to them was born a daughter, Bessie Holmes, also of Keokuk.

September 15, 1898, he was married to Mrs. Rosetta Randel and she it is who is left alone sorrowing.

He enlisted in the service of Christ and united with the Baptist church but upon his removal to Vernon in 1898 he and his wife united with the Methodist church at that place. When health permitted he greatly enjoyed attending divine services.

He suffered much from a frail body and was confined to his home most of the time. He had been very poorly all summer and his death was not unexpected.

On Monday morning in the early dawn of a new day he passed away. He leaves a wife and two children, four half brothers, two half sisters, a step mother, and five step children.

The funeral service was held at 2:30 P. M. Wednesday, Rev. Jones officiating.
