CANTRIL - Last rites were held Tuesday at the Cantril Methodist Church for 80-year-old Edward F. Pittman, of Des Moines, who died at his home in Des Moines on Saturday.

Officiating was the Reverend Murphy, of Des Moines, assisted by the local pastor, the Reverend Harold Harryman. Burial was in the quintal cemetery.

A native of Peeksville, Missouri, Pittman was born June 15, 1871, the son of Stephen Bates and Nancy Jane Douglas Pittman. The family moved to a farm near Cantril when he was three years old. Pittman attended Gem City Business College, Quincy, Illinois, and taught in the rural schools of Van Buren County. On October 14, 1896, he was married to Effie Marie Foster, who died May 30, 1903. On December 20, 1905, he was married to Mrs. Mertis Cupp Barker. From 1901 through 1909, he served as clerk of the District Court at Keosauqua.

In January 1918, Pittman was appointed superintendent of the newspaper division of the historical building, at Des Moines, a position he held until his retirement on New Years Day of this year. At the time of his retirement, Pittman was dean of the employees of the historical building. Pittman was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Des Moines.

Surviving are the widow; a son, Claude E. Pittman, Des Moines; two daughters: Mrs. Mabel Mounce, Clinton, and Mrs. Dorothy Edward, Des Moines, and a stepson, Rolla V. Barker, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. Also surviving are a brother, Clyde L. Pittman, Upland, California; two sisters: Mrs. Nora Glascock, Medford, Oregon, and Mrs. Josie Harryman, who is a Hawk-Eye Gazette correspondent at Cantril; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Two daughters and a grandson died previously.
