Lucy M. McGaffey, 89, of the Parkview Home in Fairfield, formerly of Washington, died Monday morning, May 6, 1991, at the Parkview Care Center in Fairfield. She had been in failing health for a number of years and was seriously ill since March.
Funeral services, to be officiated by the Rev. Clair Odell, are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Jones Funeral Home. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham.
Friends may begin calling Wednesday morning at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.
Lucy May Kimmel was born Aug. 8, 1901, in Van Buren County near Birmingham. She was the daughter of John and Louisa (Miner) Kimmel and attended Van Buren County country school.
On Sept, 7, 1919, she married David A. McGaffey in Keosauqua. He preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1977.
In 1946, Mrs. McGaffey and her husband started a committee through the VFW to loan hospital equipment to the people in Washington County. In 1949 they started furnishing used furniture and clothing in cooperation with the welfare agencies of the community.
She received the Rotary Community Service Award in 1970.
Mrs. McGaffey was a life-time member of the VFW Auxiliary and the United Methodist Church of Fairfield.
Survivors include a son, Gerald, Washington; a daughter, Dorothy (Mrs. Frank) Hudson, Fairfield; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Kimmel, Milton; and five sisters. Edith Fisher, Toulon, Ill.; Marietta Canaday, Selma; Ruth McGill, Davenport; Helen Leyden, Washington; and Eleanor Stalder, Brighton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, John, and three brothers.
