HOWARD HANEY HOLLAND
The news of the death of Howard Haney Holland of Keosauqua, came as a shock to the people of this community late Friday, September 30, 1910, the cause being diphtheria. Everything possible was done to combat the disease but he passed away at 8:30 Friday morning. Howard was the only child of Howard and Lillie Holland and was 13 years and six months old. His mother died when he was only a few days old and his father a few years later. After his mother’s death he was taken into the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Haney, who with their remaining daughter, Daisy, bestowed upon the child such a wealth of love and care that he never realized the loss of his parents. The sincere sympathy of many friends go out to them, and to his grandfather, Mr. E.C. Holland and family of this place, who have been called upon so often to watch loved ones pass on before.
Permission from the board of health of both Keosauqua and Milton was granted to bring the remains to Milton for burial. This was done with every precaution, the trip being made after night by the undertaker and Mr. J.C. Calhoun, arriving here at 10:30 at which time the interment took place.
IN MEMORIAM—BY Mr. J.C. Calhoun
Howard Haney Holland was born at the home of his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Haney in Keosauqua, Iowa on April 22, 1897. He lived in this home until the day of his death departing this life from the same room in which he was born, on September 30 1910. A short life, yet he accomplished much, when measured by the love of those who were near to him. His mother died at the time of his birth and his father on February 3, 1903. The father and mother are buried in the new cemetery at Milton and Howard was laid to rest beside them so that one mound marks the resting place of this family. Memorial services were held in the Keosauqua Methodist Church following the lifting of the quarantine of the Haney home. The service was a union meeting of all churches in our town, Rev. Field presiding and Rev. H.A. Ingham delivering the sermon. Rev. Perkins, Rev. Stephenson and Rev. Chaney were present and assisted in the service. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
