Benjamin Harrison Whitcanack 1889-1941

Harrison Whitcanack of Keosauqua, who was injured critically in a fall from a load of hay at his farm about six weeks ago and who had been in hospitals since that time, died at the University Hospital in Iowa City about 4:00 Saturday afternoon. He was 52 years old.

Mr. Whitcanack at the time of the fatal accident was helping store hay in a barn. The hay rope broke and he fell backward from the load of hay to the ground, landing on his head. From the time of the accident, he remained paralyzed except for slight use of a few muscles.

After being in a hospital at Kirksville, MO about a month, he was taken to the University Hospital in Iowa City. X-ray examination failed to disclose any broken bones.

Mr. Whitcanack was born near Lebanon and spent most of his life in Van Buren County. His wife died a year ago.

Surviving are six children, Mrs. Everett Wells and Mrs. Harvey Dodds of Stockport, Mrs. Howard Shipley of Cantril, and Betty, Earl and Rex at home. Mr. Whitcanack also leaves four brothers, Willis Whitcanack of Park City, MT, Charles Whitcanack of Des Moines and Ira and John Whitcanack of Keosauqua; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Hull of Milton and Mrs. Everett Gandy of Des Moines and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Keosauqua at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon in charge of the Rev. A. M. Hadley of Milton. Burial was at the Lebanon cemetery.
