JOHN W. BURCHETT RITES AT MILTON
Funeral services for John W. Burchett were held at the Christian Church in Milton Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Howard C. Irvine of Birmingham in charge. He was assisted by the Rev. W.W. Coverdale.
Interment was in the Sunnyside Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Fisher, Emmett Canfield, Hollis Moore, Joe Moore, Charles Rehkoph and Paul Wilson.
John William Burchett, son of Burr Benjamin and Nancy Ann Wilson Burchett, was born on a farm near Milton, Iowa, September 17, 1857, and passed away January 13, 1949, at the Ottumwa hospital aged 91 years, three months and 27 days.
On August 31, 1948, then being nearly 91 years of age, he underwent an appendicitis operation from which he fully recovered. On January 7, 1949, he suffered a paralytic stroke from which he never rallied.
He was a retired farmer, having farmed all of his life except for a few years teaching school while a young man. He received his education in the rural school near his home and in the Moulton Academy. He was a farmer at heart, being happiest when buying, selling and handling his livestock.
His favorite pastime was reading, and he spent many enjoyable hours with his Bible, as well as keeping informed on current events. He took great interest in the welfare of his neighbors and friends. Being able to drive his own car, he made numerous calls on the sick and shut-ins. If not able to call in person, he would inquire by phone, having made several such calls the evening before he was taken ill.
He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church at Lebanon, acting as Sunday School superintendent for many years and also being one of the elders of the church. After moving to Milton he transferred his membership to the Presbyterian Church there, where he always took an active part.
On August 31, 1887, he was united in marriage to Martha Mary Bonar, and to them three children was born: two sons, Otto and Burr Burchett; and one daughter, Clara Burchett Kendrick.
“J.W.” as he was called by many of his friends, was the last of a family of 14 children. He is survived by his two sons and five grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his wife, daughter, his parents and his brothers and sisters. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
