GEORGE W. CONWELL
George W. Conwell was born in Sussex County Delaware December 27, 1823, and died at his home in this city January 30, 1902 and was 70 years, 1 month and 2 days old. He was married to Miss Laura Reed July 7, 1850. There were born unto them four children all of whom together with the wife and mother have long since passed over the river of death, leaving him alone in the world. In 1845 or 1846 when our government was in war with Mexico, he enlisted in the army and served faithfully during the war under Gen. Zachariah Taylor. Again when the government called for help to defend the flag in the War Between the States, he responded and was a brave and dutiful soldier during the entire war. He was married to Miss Lydia Russell of this place on February 1, 1870. They were blessed with six children, three of whom still living: Mrs. Emma Davis of Moulton, Mrs. May Hall of this city and Miss Delpha Conwell now a teacher in our public schools. The others with the wife and mother have gone on before. The wife died August 22, 1901. The deceased came to this community may years ago, he was a member of the Galesburg Lodge 132 I.O.O.F. of Galesburg Illinois, but October 6, 1869 he transferred his membership to the Lone Star Lodge of this place and was faithful in all his Lodge work. He was highly esteemed by his brethren in the Lodges as was attested by the watchful care given him during his long siege of sickness.
The funeral was from the M.E. Church of this place at 1:30 o’clock P.M. Saturday February 1, 1902, T.A. Renfro preaching, Rev. J.F. Barnett assisting in the service. The I.O.O.F. had charge of the burial, the interment being in the new cemetery. Thus has passed away from us one of our old and respected citizens.
I am not a relative of this person.
