Lurissa Jane Hill was born February 22, 1848, near Morning Sun Iowa. When eight years old she moved with her parents to Salem, Oregon. They went by ox team, over what is now known, as the Oregon Trail. They had lived there only a few years when the father passed away.
Her mother later married Dr. S.R. Bergan and soon after they returned to Iowa and located at Lebanon, where he resumed his practice of medicine. Here she grew to womanhood, and was married to James H. Barker on January 2, 1864. Her husband enlisted soon after in Company G, Third Iowa Cavalry.
After the war was over, they settled on a farm two miles northeast of Lebanon, where most of their children were born. Later they moved to a farm five miles southwest of Milton, where they lived until her husband passed away, August 23, 1904. She then moved to Milton, where she gad made her home for the last 30 years. She passed away October 18, 1934, being at the time of her passing 86 years, 7 months and 26 days of age.
She was baptized in the Baptist faith at an early age and had always kept that faith. She faithfully attended the Baptist Church at Milton until her health failed.
Mrs. Barker’s whole life was devoted to her family and home. In her last days she suffered much and longed to go and be at rest.
She leaves to mourn her departure eight children, Mrs. Mary Muir, of Longmont Colorado; Will and Harlie Barker of Council Bluffs Iowa; Miss Della Barker of Winnipeg Manitoba Canada; Mrs. Dora McLeland; Mrs. Alma Hartman and Charles Barker, of Milton and Mrs. Lena Pinnell; of Ottumwa; also 14 grandchildren and one great grandson.
And so another precious mother passed on to her reward. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
