J.D. Wallis died at his home in Ottumwa, Tuesday morning, September 20, 1904 at the advanced age of 64 years.
The deceased was born in Indiana in November 1839, and when but three years of age he came with his father to Van Buren County, Iowa. Here he grew to manhood and after receiving a liberal education he embarked in the mercantile business in the city of Milton, which he continued for eleven years. In January 1880, he came to Bloomfield and in company with his son-in-law John Langenstein, started a wagon and carriage shop which was for years the pride of the city. They employed at one time 12 men and did a thriving business.
Mr. Wallis was an old soldier having served in Company K. Fifteenth Iowa infantry and taking part in all of Sherman's campaigns. Several years ago he was married to Miss Cora Beldock, a resident of this county, and moved to Ottumwa where he resided at the time of his death.
The funeral services were conducted at the family residence, Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m., by Rev. S.S. Elder, pastor of the Christian Church. The remains will be brought to Bloomfield for burial Thursday morning and interment will be made in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
