John Downing - Born Licking Co., OH on November 1, 1831 and died Bentonsport on February (or August) 15, 1910. To MO with parents when he was 4 years old. At age 10 moved to Van Buren Co. Spent 2 years in CA, crossed the plains with ox team in 1861. Returned to IA via NY. Married Nancy Hellyer in 1866. Nine children, two, Thomas M., died in infancy and Mrs. Daisy Bailey died 2 1/2 years ago. Survived by wife and 7 children, 4 sons: John E. of Selma; Ross L. of Bentonsport; Jas. C., Grand Forks, ND; Geo. B. of Rock Island, IL and 3 daughters: Mrs. C. T. Ruble of Bentonsport; Mrs. J. O. Murphy of Eldon and Miss Iva E. of Tipton. F-Valentine Cemetery, Bentonsport.
