Mrs. Rachel Thomas Gaston - Born in Switzerland Co., IN September 24, 1826 and died at home of her daughter, Mrs. Cora Murphy in Ft. Madison, IA August 7, 1909, age 82 years, 10 months and 17 days. She was married to William Gaston September 20, 1845 who preceded her 13 years ago. Made her home in Van Buren Co. nearly 75 years. She was the mother of 11 children, seven of whom are living: James Gaston of Mt. Sterling, IA; George W.; Charles W.; W. O.; ______; Mrs. Anna Gaston and Mrs. Cora Murphy of Ft. Madison. She was the grandmother of 26 grandchildren and the great-grandmother of 16, and great-great grandmother of one. She also leaves two sisters: Mrs. Mary Lee of Sterling, IL, age 90 years, and Mrs. Lizzie Thomas of Hillsboro, IA, age 85 years, the latter two attending her funeral. At age of 15 years she joined the Methodist Church. Buried Vernon Cemetery by side of her husband.
