Mrs. Martha Carter Murphy - Born Lexington, KY on November 14, 1824. When 12 years of age her mother with the older children came to IA near Farmington. Married September 4, 1846 to Thomas Murphy. Ten children, two of whom, John and Thomas Benton, died before their mother. Youngest child was 5 years when they moved to Vernon. Resided 8 years, purchased a home. She died January 28, 1909, age 84 years, 2 months, 14 days. Husband, one brother, Washington Carter of Farmington; six sons: William H.; Cornelius; Charles; Frederick R.; Joseph A.; Allen G.; and 2 daughters: Mrs. Alice McIntosh and Mary Strickling are left. She also leaves 30 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. F-Vernon Cemetery, Vernon.
