Obituary of Mrs. J.S. Shepherd

Flora Irish was born in Pendleton, Indiana, March 26, 1850, and passed to the Better World February 12, 1924, at the age of seventy-three years, ten months and seventeen days, at her home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. While still a child she moved with her parents to Van Buren county, Iowa, where she resided until she reached full maturity. She was united in marriage with Mr. J.S. Shepherd, February 21, 1895, at Centerville, Iowa, since which time she has been a resident of Mt. Ayr. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, by a former marriage, Mrs. Mary Brickley Duffield, three grandchildren, Joe, John, and George Duffield, all of Portland, Oregon, four brothers, one residing in New Mexico and three in Des Moines, and also by three step children, to whom she was a true and loving mother. She was a consistent and faithful member of the Methodist church of Mt. Ayr, Order of Eastern Star, Chapter CK of the P. E. O. Sisterhood, the Kensington Club, M. E. Aid Society and Foreign Mission Societies of the church. Her body was brought to Keosauqua, her former home, and placed in the Irish lot in Purdom Cemetery Friday, February 15th, services being held at the M. E. church. Services were conducted by Rev. J. C. Caughlan. A number of the members of the local P. E. O. Chapter of Keosauqua attended in a body, many of whom were her personal friends when she lived here. The relatives who accompanied the remains of Mrs. Shepherd to Keosauqua were: Her husband, J. S. Shepherd, her daughter, Mrs. Mary Duffield of Portland, Oregon, her brothers C. F. Irish, Chas. Irish and J.S. Irish, Mrs. J. S. Irish all of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Hartshorn of Danville, Ill., Mr and Mrs. George Shepherd of Mt. Ayr. Mr. Shepherd being a son of J. S. Shepherd and Mrs. Hartshorn a daughter. Only those who knew Mrs. Shepherd can realize just how great the loss of this unusual woman will be [ to the aged husband, relatives + her many friends. She was the friend of all with whom she came in contact + to know her was to love and admire her. ]
