Thomas A. Bell, son of Freeman and Handa Bell was born near Delphos Ohio,February 26, 1849, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, November 1, 1934, at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 4 days.
When about 16 years old, he moved with his parents to Iowa and has lived in or near Milton the greater part of his life.
On September 23, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Russell, a union which proved most happy. His wife was called to her eternal home, January 22, 1917, after which he made his home with his daughter Cora Jolley, who lived in St Louis Missouri until last year.
One daughter was born to this home, and a nephew Freddie Bell was reared from infancy as their own son. He preceded them in death in his early boyhood.
His three brothers, Russell, Ephraim and Elias died some years ago, and left him and his sister, Mrs. Nettie Summers the only survivors of the family.
He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge for sixty-four years. He was the state representative of the lodge for several terms.
The departure of Mr. Bell marks the passing of one of the early pioneers of the community; of one who was the only wagon-maker and blacksmith Milton possessed for several years. He served the community as constable for many consecutive terms until age required his retirement.
He loved Milton and was never happier than when he returned to be with relatives and old friends. He enjoyed reliving his school days in the old frame building where the Rose Bud gas station now stands. His McGuffey's fifth reader was his most prized possession. He was always cheerful in the home. His presence will be greatly missed by his daughter and son-in-law; by his grandchildren, Thomas Jolley and Mrs. Mildred Rue; by his two great grandchildren, Thomas Jolley and Arthur Rue; by his sister Mrs. Nettie Summers; and by his nieces and nephews.
During his last illness he was patient and kind, and alway appreciated every little service tendered him by those who cared for him.
The funeral was held from the home, Sunday morning. It was conducted by Rev. M.D.Wyatt. Interment was made in Sunnyside cemetery.
I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
