Died at Keosauqua January 11, 1899. In 1822 Hugh and Mary Brown, parents of John, came from Scotland and settled in Albany, NY where John G. Brown was born on December 19, 1825. He was the oldest of 5 sons and brother of 4 sisters. He lived in Albany and Carbondale, PA. In 1842 the family moved to Keosauqua. In 1851 John went to California in the Gold Rush. He was there 2 years. On April 5, 1864 he married Margaret McArthur, a daughter of Wm. McArthur. Three daughters and one son made up the family: Mary G. wife of Craig Miller of Keosauqua; Maggie E., wife of Josiah B. Stidger of Colorado Springs, CO: Bessie, wife of Stanley W. Manning of Keosauqua and Archibald of Keosauqua. F-Purdom Cemetery, Keosauqua.
