CRAVEN

At his residence on Thursday November 7, 1878, B.W. Craven, in the 67th year of his age.
Mr. Craven was one of the oldest settlers of this neighborhood, being the first white man to make his home in this part of Iowa, having settled here in 1837, and has lived here ever since. He saw this country grow from a wilderness, inhabited by the Indians, to its present condition. He was the first pioneer to open up to civilization this beautiful country we are now enjoying, but, unlike the most of them, he stayed to see the fruits of his labors ripen and be benefitted from it. We understand that he was originally a resident of Kentucky, moving from there to Indiana, thence to Iowa. Mr. Craven has always been an energetic, honest, upright citizen, highly esteemed by all his friends and neighbors, who lament sorely his loss, but one consolation is left, that he has done his work here on earth and done it with credit. (From the same paper, this notice appeared)
The remains of Mrs. Craven who was buried nearly 30 years ago in the Gray Cemetery were taken up and removed to the cemetery north of town and interred beside those of her husband, who died last Thursday.
I am not related, and am copying this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
