Mary A. Sparks, daughter of James H. and Dorcas Sparks, was born in Indiana on June 11, 1863, and passed from this life from her home in Milton Iowa, on October 29, 1919, at the age of 56 years, 4 months, and 18 days.
When a child, she came with her parents to Iowa and grew to womanhood at Cantril. On August 3, 1879, she was married to George W. Halstead, who died on November 20, of the same year. To this union was born one daughter Mrs. Nellie Haney of Milton.
On March 28, 1890, she was married to C.W. Baird. To them two children were born, one son who died in infancy and Mrs. May Holland, of Milton.
After her marriage to Mr. Baird, she came to Milton and has since made her home here. She united with the Baptist Church while living in Cantril and on coming to Milton, she joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and continued a faithful and active member until the time of her death.
She was very active in the charities and Christian societies of which she was a member. At the time of her death she was county treasurer of the Womans's Christian Temperance Union, also secretary and treasurer of the Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist church and chaplain of the Rebecca Lodge.
She was a faithful loving wife and very zealous for the welfare of her children and grandchildren. She leaves her husband, one brother, two daughters and six grandchildren to mourn her departure.
The funeral services were held in the Methodist Church on Friday afternoon at 1:00 conducted by the pastor P.M. Conant, after which the remains were laid to rest in Sunnyside Cemetery. The burial service at the grave was in charge of the Rebecca Lodge.
We wish to thank the friends who were so kind and helpful during the sickness and death of our wife, mother and sister and for the many beautiful floral offerings.
Mr. C.W. Baird, Mr. and Mrs. George Holland, Mr. and Mrs. George H. Haney, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Sparks. I am not related, and am copying this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
