Adaline Carter, Negress, said to be 115 years old, died Saturday at the Fred Fehyl home where she had lived for the last thirty five years. The woman was born a slave and was the property of Asa Munsel. At the close of the war when she was given her liberty, she chose to remain with the Munsel family rather than take advantage of her freedom.
At the death of Asa Munsel she went to live with the Feyhl family and in return for their kindness to her, she gave her services free. She was able to perform household work until a short time before her death.
The Munsels, in payment for the woman's devotion to them, had given her forty acres of now valuable Van Buren County land. Just before her death, she transferred this land to the Feyhl family.
Davis County Republican February 10, 1916
