Mrs. Mary S. Atkins, better known to her friends as "Mate", 95, died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 1960, at the Brown Nursing Home in Bloomfield, Iowa.She had been in failing health about a year. Her entire life was spent in Van Buren County, and she was a pioneer rural school teacher. A resident of Milton for fifty years, she was a member of the Methodist Church and a 50 year member of the Eastern Star.
She was born Nov. 6, 1864, the daughter of Ezekiel and Angeline Sample, and was married to Dr. W. W. Atkins, who died 46 years ago.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Jennie Muir of Keosauqua; one step-daughter, Mrs. R. L. Van Nocker of St. Paul, Minn.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Marcia W. Lanz of Denver, Colo.; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by one son, Karl; three brothers, John, George and Arthur; and three half-brothers, Stewart, Clark [cut off]
