HIRAM MELLOTT
Hiram Mellott, oldest son of W. F. and Salome Mellott, was born March 27, 1845, in Bedford county, Pa. He grew up on a farm and did such work as farm boys did in those days. He attended public school until January 1864, and at the age of 19 enlisted in the Civil War in Company 22, Pennsylvania Cavalry Volunteers with which he served until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged and mustered out July, 1865. In 1870 he united in marriage with Miss Bequeath. In 1883 they left Pennsylvania and settled in Nebraska, Polk County, where he worked at the carpenter trade most of the time. His wife died in 1910 and in 1912 he came to Iowa to visit his younger brother, Francis, when he met Amanda Wooden who was helping to care for the Mellott family, as the wife and mother was very poorly. On December 1, 1912, they were married at Bloomfield, Iowa. He has been heard many times to say, "We never have a word. I enjoy my home, I like the place and it has been a happy, prosperous time for me."
He departed this life April 5, 1928, at the age of 83 years and 8 days. He was a member of the Methodist church and it can be truly said that he was a good man. He has gone to claim his reward. He has been afflicted for several months and all the time his good wife was right with him and caring for him without a murmur. He did not want any one else to take care of him, and when she was told she could not care for him any longer and he must be taken away, she said never as long as I am able and can get help. Only the good Lord can take him away and then I shall know where he is and how he is treated. Six months ago his brother came to help take care of him and he has been faithful, patient in his care of him. Hiram leaves a wife, one brother of Cantril, Iowa, besides many nieces and nephews.
"The muffled drums sad roll has beat
the soldiers tatoo,
No more in life's parade shall meet,
the brave and fallen few,
In fames eternal camping ground, the
silent tents are spread
And glory guards with solemn sound
the bivouac of the dead."Services were held at the Methodist church at Cantril, Iowa, conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. M. Smith. Will Jack and J. Hootman sang. Interment was made in the Hoskins cemetery.
