MORTUARY RECORD
A. J. JACOBS
Mr. A. J. Jacobs of Cedar township, ex-county supervisor, died Thursday last, after a painful illness with rheumatism. Mr. Jacobs was born in Fayette county, Pa., Feb. 8, 1829, being a little past 77 years of age.
Mr. Jacobs came to Iowa in 1857, and located upon the farm upon which he lived ever afterwards. In 1851 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna M. Jordan who died in 1871. In 1876 Mr. Jacobs was again married to Mrs. Clarinda Junk (nee Nixon). Mr. Jacobs was a farmer in good circumstances and raised a nice family. He held the offices of clerk assessor and school treasurer in his township, and in 1878 was elected one of three county supervisors, and was re-elected in 1881, over Mr. A. J. Leffler by 212 majority.
He was one of the three supervisors, who, April 5, 1882, let the contract for three river bridges, one at Pittsburg, one at Bentonsport and one at Farmington. The other supervisors were L. W. Cantril and A. G. Lippincott, all of whom have now passed to their reward. It was estimated at the time that the cost to the county would be $18,000 each for bridge or $54,000 in the aggregate. Since Mr. Jacobs left the board in 1884 he had lived in retirement, respected and esteemed by all.
