MARY ELIZABETH HOOTMAN
Mary Elizabeth Hootman was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, January 25, 1888, and passed away at her home near Tekamah, Neb., May 17, 1923, aged 35 years, 3 months and 21 days.
At the age of fifteen she was converted to Christ and baptised and united with the Baptist church at Milton, Iowa, and was constantly engaged in some form of religious work until her death.
On January 10, 1908, she was united in marriage to Rev. W. E. Overturf. Eight children were born to them, one dying in infancy. She is survived by her husband and seven children, namely, Mildred, Claudine, Maxine, William, Florence, Frances and Wayne. In the various places where Brother Overturf has been pastor, she was a faithful pastor's wife and helper, and numbered her friends by her acquaintances. Her services in the music and the various organizations of the churches was so helpful that it leaves a vacancy hard to fill. She literally gave her life in serving others. This that she has done will be told, and thus her works will follow herein the lives of others. More to be desired is such a life than gold, yea than much fine gold.
She was brought back to Davis county for burial, in the cemetery near where Brother Overturf was born and raised, and where others of his loved ones were laid to rest.
The funeral services were held in the church near the cemetery, conducted by Rev. T. H. Dabney, who had in the last four years enjoyed much of the sweet fellowship of Brother and Sister Overturf's home and knew something of the value of Sister Overturf's life in the home and churches in which she served. There was a vast crowd of pepole [sic] assembled at her funeral, expressing their sympathy to Brother Overturf, and showing the esteem in which she was held.
Sleep on and take thy rest,
Dear one, for the Lord knows best.
A wife you were, to me so true,
And a loving friend to all you knew.
Sleep and rest, wife, mother dear,
For thy deeds we hold in memory here;
Until God shall call us one by one,
To the home beyond the setting sun,
There, to be with Him and you
Where we will never more bid adieu.(Photocopy of this obit is located on page 99 of Obit Book A found in the Van Buren County, Iowa Genealogical Society's collection at the Keosauqua Public Library in March 2000. Name and date of newspaper not given.)
I am NOT related to this person and am posting it for those who may find him/her in their family tree.
