WAS AN EARLY RESIDENT OF CANTRIL HAVING RUN A SAW MILL. MOVED LATER TO WEST POINT

Word was received by Cantril people that Emery Cantril had died at his home in West Point, Iowa, Sunday the 14th, of malaria fever and a general breakdown in health. He was well known at Cantril, being a brother of L. W. Cantril, after whom the town of Cantril was named. We give the obituary as follows:

Emery Elbert Cantril was born in Cleveland, Ohio, March 8, 1839 and died at his home in West Point, Iowa, Sunday, Nov., 14, 1909, at 11:30 P. M., of malaria fever and general breakdown, being 70 years, 8 months and 6 days old. He came from Cleveland to a place near Lebanon when quite young and there he resided until manhood, when he went to Taylor county. From there he and his wife came to Cantril and for a number of years he run [sic] a saw mill. They then moved to Mt. Sterling where he was engaged in the same business. Later they moved to Bonaparte where he conducted a handle factory and from there to West Point where he has made his home for the last 12 years.

On June 13, 1858, he was united in marriage to Casander Lewis and to them were born twelve children, six of whom are living and six who are dead. The dead are William, Elza, Lemuel, Daisy, Gret and Mrs. Rosa Wellborn. The living are T. N. and J. T. of Fort Madison, Jas. E. of West Point, Mrs. Alice Roberts, Cantril, Ia., Mrs. Hattie Farwell, New Castle, Pa., and Mrs. C. E. Demple of Des Moines, Iowa.

The deceased had been a strong physical man and when he was taken with the fever, it seemed as though his former strength gave away and from Tuesday until Sunday he was at deaths door.

He is survived by his wife, six children, twenty-two grand children and one great grand child and a host of friends. He was a former member of the I. O. O. F. lodge at Cantril and a member of the M. E. church.

Short services were held at the home in West Point Tuesday afternoon and the funeral will be held today (Wednesday) from the M. E. church at this place, conducted by Rev. Lloyd Tennant, after which the body will be laid to rest in the Cantril cemetery.
