MRS. ALICE CANFIELD
Mary Alice Brown was born near Memphis, Mo., Aug. 25, 1849, and died at her home in Milton, Iowa, December 24, 1928. When she was about 11 years of age she moved with her family to a farm near Lebanon, Iowa. While yet in her youth she confessed Christ as her Savior and joined the Lebanon M. E. church. On Nov. 7, 1879, she was united in marriage to Mr. Malich H. Canfield. To this union five children were born--Della J. and Harlan George, who preceded her in death, and three who survive their mother, Mrs. Mamie Hargrove, W. D. and E. A. Canfield, of Milton. Mrs. Canfield lived on a farm until the death of her beloved husband in 1916. In the spring of 1917 she moved to Milton, where she has since made her home.
Mrs. Canfield was loved by all who knew her, and her large circle of friends in the community were shocked to learn of her death just the day before Christmas. Her many friends will remember her kind words, her faithful heart, her devotion to duty and to her church and Sunday school, which she always attended when health permitted. Her family will remember her as a kind and devoted mother, whose every energy was spent for those near and dear to her, and as a woman whose ideals and standards of Christian living gave her the true spirit of a woman of beautiful character. In her home she was at her best, here she presided with queenly grace; and with true motherly love and tenderness she performed the duties of wife and mother with cheerfulness and kindness, never complaining, but always encouraging those of her family with a true motherly devotion.
She leaves to mourn her loss in addition to her three children, three brothers, Mr. J. W. Brown of Milton, Tom Brown, Mason City, John Brown, Vancouver, B.C., and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Johnson, Lebanon; Mrs. Etta Merwin, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Laura Canfield, Coldwater, Kan., six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the M. E. church Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. C. B. Rayhill, and interment was in the Lebanon cemetery.
