DOUBLE OPERATION FOR APPENDICITIS
June Arnold Does Not Recover But Her Brother Lee Is Doing WellAt the request of Dr. Russell of this place Dr. Ruth and an assistant came up from Keokuk Friday for consultation on a case of appendicitis in the W. H. Arnold family in Des Moines township, the patient being their 12 year old daughter June. Diagnosis showed a malignant case of appendicitis with no possibility of recovery without an operation, and even then there was small hopes for recovery. The parents decided as a last resort to have the operation performed. It proved that the diagnosis was correct, but the operation failed to save the girl's life and she died the next night. The day the surgeons arrived, Lee, a son of the same family, was compelled to leave the cornfield by sudden illness, and investigation showed that his ailment was also appendicitis. An operation was performed on him and at last report he was able to sit up in bed. The boy and girl each had had several attacks of the malady within the last four months, and back in January a successful operation for appendicitis was performed upon an elder girl of the same family.
The girl's funeral was held at the Christian church here last Sunday, services conducted by Elder Wheeler, and the burial was in the Purdom cemetery. There was a large audience in attendance, and all expressed deep sympathy with the bereaved parents who seem to have more than their share of grief and sorrow. It was only a few years ago that the father, a stout, healthy, industrious man, lost an eye from an accident and later the sight of the other eye failed.
