New London, Ia., March 8. -- Rev. Henry Clay Dameron was born in Smith county, West Virginia, August 4, 1841, and died at his home in New London, March 6, 1916, aged 74 years, 7 months and 2 days. He moved to Tennessee when about eventeen [sic] years of age and worked for some time at the [can't read] trade. He served for three years in the Second Tennessee cavalry, and came out as a chaplain's orderly. At the close of the war he came to Illinois and moved to Kansas about 1871. Here he began preaching and moving back to Illinois, where he was ordained in the Southern Methodist church in 1873. From Illinois Mr. Dameron journeyed to Virginia, where he received his elders credentials from the Methodist Protestant church. He returned to Illinois in 1883 and to New London in 18[92?]. After this he again served charges in Illinois, Missouri and Iowa until 1911, when failing health caused his retirement from the active work. During the time of his ministerial labors he served charges at Girard, Kan.; Ferris, Lewistown, Eldora, Holder, Arcadia and Chapin, Ill.; Abingdon, Glade Springs and Love's Memorial church in Virginia, Tarkio, Kohoka, Zion Hill, Powersville, Mo., and at New London, Milton, Richwood, Mt. Zion, Rochester, Mapleton and Montezuma, Iowa. In addition to these charges he served about two years in the evangelistic field. Mr. Dameron was married August 11, 1863, to Laura Ann Bates at Knoxville, Tenn. To this union the following children were born: William Thomas, deceased; Gertrude Kennedy, of Muskogee, Okla.; Robert H., of New London; Sarah E. Elsome, of New London; George Ward, of Winfield; Cosby Barr, deceased; Julia K. Miller, of Colfax, Ia.; Ruble Ray, of Mt. Pleasant; Arthur Noel, of Bluefield, W. Va., and three children who died in infancy. Besides the wife and the seven children and eighteen grandchildren living, there remain two sisters and one brother. Funeral services were held at the M. P. church Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock.
