THE OBITUARY

Arthur Friend Holder was born July 3, 1839, in Barber County, West Virginia, and died Dec. 31, 1909, at Graham hospital, Keokuk. He was the son of David and Mary E. Holder, the history of the family dating back to Colony days, they were among the first settlers of the state. His parents came to Scotland County, Mo., about 1851 and afterward bought a farm in this county on the state line. His educational advantages were limited, yet by his unaided efforts he acquired a fairly good practical education. When about 22 or 23 years of age he engaged in business at Upton, at that time quite a business town. While there he was Post-Master by appointment of President Johnson. During the war he served in the state line service in Company of Capt. M. O. Cretcher. In Feb. 1869, he married Miss Sarah E. Houtz, who died Aug. 22, 1880. He was married again Dec. 27, 1881, to Miss K. L. Warner who survives him.
