Obituary

Andrew Forbes was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, on May 31, 1842. After living there until he reached maturity, he conceived the idea of going further west and in the early sixties went by ox team into the northwest, into what are now the states of Idaho, Oregon and Washington. A stay of two years satisfied his desires and he came back to his native home, returning by boat down the Missouri River. Many and exciting are the tales he used to tell of his experiences on this return trip.

Soon after his return Mr. Forbes was married to Miss Dura E. Patterson and to this union seven children were born. The first died as an infant. The other six, Nancy, Mary Francis, William F., James E., Byron G. and Grover C. all lived to mature life. The first three, however, crossed the river of Death in advance of their loved father. James and Grover are citizens of the San Luis valley at the present time, while Byron is located at Salt Lake, City, Utah.

Mr. Forbes came to Colorado in 1892 and settled with his family near what is now Russell Springs. Here he engaged for many years in the catle and sheep business and was successful in his work. The family was broken up in large measure in 1905 when the wife and mother was called to the other world.

In 1910 Mr. Forbes was married to Mrs. Jennie Bunn and lived happily until her death in 1913. After a year spent in the home of his children, he moved to Saguache and resided here until his death which occurred December 10, 1917.

Personally Mr. Forbes was a very lovable man. Always bright and optimistic, he was not only cheerful himself, but kept those about him in the same mood. Even in the face of reverses and adversity he kept the same optimistic outlook on life, and when the Great Destroyer came he met him with courage and smile.

For a long term of years he was a member of the Methodist church and served as steward in the church at Pittsburg, Iowa. He has gone to the reward which God the Father alone can give. We pray God’s blessing on those who live to mourn his loss.
