GREEN, WINANS, KECK

Until after the civil war, James Green was one of the proprietors of the paper mill that operated at Bentonsport and a prominent and influential citizen of that town. He was a good man and was an uncle of the late Mrs. Peter R. Keck who died a year ago this summer. About 1870, as we remember it, Mr. Green moved to Kansas and we lost track of him until last Friday when we received a marked copy of a Hutchinson, Kansas paper of March 13 containing the following announcement of Mr. Green’s death: “James Green, the father of Mrs. G.W. Winans, died at the Winans home on First avenue east, yesterday afternoon, after quite a long illness. He was 81 years old and for the last eight years had made his home in this city. His acquaintance was not wide, but by all who knew him, he was loved and respected. He was a regular attendant at the Presbyterian church, and a member of the church of that faith at Junction City. Mr. Green leaves three children, George A. Green of Fort Madison, Iowa, J.C. Green of Browning, Mo., and Mrs. George W. Winans of this city. Mr. George Green arrived in the city this morning and with Mr. and Mrs. Winans he will accompany the body to Junction City, where it will be buried beside that of his wife, who died several years ago. The funeral will be held at 8 o’clock tomorrow morning. By a rather strange coincidence tomorrow is the eighty-first anniversary of Mr. Green’s birthday. The family has the sympathy of an exceedingly large circle of friends.”
(note: there is no year on this article, but the others on the same page were dated 1905.)
