NEWLON, STEWART, CRESSWELL

Charles E. Newlon was born in Culpepper county, Va., March 12, 1820, and passed away at his home in Bentonsport, Iowa, June 22, 1904, at the advanced age of 84 years, 3 months and 10 days. He moved to Ohio at the age of 16 years and was married to Miss Margareta Stewart in 1843. To this union was born two children, John of the regular United States army, and Mrs. Lucy Robbins of Rockford, Ill. He moved to Iowa and settled in Mt. Pleasant in 1845 and in 1847, his wife died. About 1850 he came to Bentonsport. In 1857 he was married to Miss. Nancy E. Cresswell. To them were born three children, Dora, Kate and Charlie. Kate having passed away 14 years ago. Dora and Charlie reside in Bentonsport. Mr. Newlon was a member of the Bentonsport Presbyterian church for about 50 years and lived an exemplary Christian life. Quiet and retiring, always ready to lighten the burdens of others. Truly a good man is gone. The surviving relatives are his wife, two sons and two daughters, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a member in good standing of the I.O.O.F. lodge under whose auspices the funeral was conducted Friday a.m. from the Presbyterian church, the Rev. C.S. McElhinney of Fairfield, officiating. The pall bearers were Harry Robinson, Frank Burns, Perry Murphy and J. Davis. The choir was composed of Messrs. J. McCracken, O. Bostock and Misses Effie and Ada Seward, Sallie Murphy and Etta Weaver. Among the relatives in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Cresswell of Ottumwa, Mr. and Mrs. John Cresswell of Harrisburg, Mr. and Mrs. Harlan and Misses Sarah and Anna Farmer of Cedar township, and Sheridan Cresswell of Lenox, Iowa, Mr. And Mrs. Manhardt and Mr. and Mrs. Kelley of Farmington, Iowa.
