Mrs. Effie Cox.

Mrs. Effie Cox was the last of her generation in Manito to bear the Cox name. With her passing, another chapter of community history has ended. The Cox family was instrumental in the founding of Manito and in the development of this community.

Effie Cox was born in Bonaparte, Iowa on November 21, 1874, a daughter of Zachary and Belle Cox. She grew to womanhood in that community. Before coming to Manito, she served a few years as postal clerk in the post office at Bonaparte.

Mrs. Cox came to Manito with their parents some 50 years ago. She opened a millinery store in Manito and was quite successful in her business undertaking. Later she and her husband operated the Golden Rule Grocery Store for several years.

Effie was united in marriage to Benjamin Cox in Louisville, Kentucky, September 27, 1926. They were tenderly devoted to each other and shared happiness of married life for almost 25 years. Mr. Cox preceded her in death April 15, 1951.

Their years of married life were filled with responsibility. They tenderly cared for their parents and ministered unto them during months of lingering illness. At no time did they complain, but counted the privilege of service is one of the Christian joys of life.

Mrs. Cox was a lovely person. She was a member of the Manito Methodist Church in Manito Camp, Royal Neighbors of America. Her life was an example of the virtues of Christian womanhood. She was tender and compassionate, thoughtful and understanding. She loved people of all ages and from every walk of life. She saw beneath the surface of humanity to the deeper longings, desires and the hungers of the spirit. The she tried to alleviate __________ . Despite her own modest circumstances, Effie always saw someone whose need was greater than her own. She was quick to minister and to help with advice and counsel.

She walk humbly with God through the years. When sorrow or trouble came, she bowed to His greater will and traveled on with faith and confidence. As the frailties of life increased, she yearned more and more for the hour when she would be forever with her Lord and know again the blessed reunion with dear ones who have gone before.

God granted her desire to go home last Monday evening, January 12, 1959, at the age of 84. She passed away at the Havana Nursing Home where she had been a patient for the past 11 months.

Effie is survived by one niece and three nephews: Bessie Risinger, Evanston, Illinois; then Risinger, Joliet, Illinois: Harold McCluggage, Springfield, Illinois and James Cox of Duluth, Minnesota. She is also survived by two cousins: Gary Whitmore and Nellie Whitmore of Bonaparte, Iowa, as well as a number of other relatives and close friends.
