A Death at Farmington

Mrs. Elizabeth Newman, another of the old pioneers of Farmington, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sewell in Farmington, July 26, 1901, at the ripe age of 81 years, 1 month and 2 days.

Elizabeth Straw was born at Frankfort, Germany, June 24, 1820 and was married to Andrew Newman in Baltimore, March 1835. To this union were born thirteen children, seven of whom survive the parent.

Mr. and Mrs. Newman came to Farmington in 1838, but only remained a short time, when they settled on the homestead in Clark county, Mo., near the line of Van Buren county, Iowa, where they patiently endured the hardships and privations of frontier life.

In 1865 death claimed her companion and a faithful wife was left with the care of a large family.

She had been sick for the past six months and confined to her bed during the last five weeks. Those suffering intensely she was patient, never uttering a word of complaint, but ever thankful for the kindness and helpfulness of her many friends and neighbors.

She leaves to mourn her departure, besides her seven children, one brother, thirty-four grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren who were all much attached to grandma.

Mrs. Newman was a devoted wife, an affectionate mother and a most estimable neighbor; but now the life struggle is over, the worn body that served her for more than four-score years is laid to rest beside that of her husband, in the Acasto, Mo., cemetery.

Funeral services were conducted at the late home and at the Acasto church by Pastor Thos. Ratcliffe of Farmington, in the presence of a large gathering of sympathetic friends and neighbors.

She being dead, yet speaketh in the memories of a great circle of mourning ones.
