James Hamilton Johnson, son of Richard H. and Mary A. Johnson, was born in Scotland County, Missouri, November 21, 1867. His father died October 7, 1879. The family moved in 1881 to Cantril, Iowa, where they resided till 1887, when they moved to Bonaparte. He attended the public schools until 15 years of age when he commenced the study of telegraphy at Cantril, finishing the course in Bonaparte with A. B. Ruby. His first station was Clifland, where he took charge of the office about eight months. He afterwards went to Nobleton, remaining there almost three years. He afterwards held a station at Leighton, Zearing, Clinton, Cedar Rapids and Maquoketa, being compelled to resign at the last-mentioned place on account of poor health, on the 19th of February.

He was married at Keosauqua on September 2, 1891 to Miss Clara Stewart, of Bonaparte, who, with a mother and two sons, Chas. S. Johnson and Guy R. Johnson are left of his immediate relatives to mourn his untimely departure.

In company with his companion he returned to Bonaparte Saturday, February 25th and died at the home of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, just one week later--on March 4th., having attained the age of 31 years, 4 months and 27 days.

The funeral occurred in Bonaparte on Monday, March 6, 1899, and was under the auspices of the Bonaparte Lodge No. 1949, Modern Woodmen of America, of which order deceased was an honored member.

We will add to the above obituary notice the well deserved words that Jim was a genial, industrious young man of good habits, and his early death is deplored by all who knew him.
