CHRISTINA NELSON 1810-1880

Christena Nelson, consort of Jonathan W. Nelson departed this life, January 19,1880.

Mother Nelson was born in Pendleton county, Virginia (now West VA.) Was married to Jonathan W. Nelson,March 24, 1831. In the fall of 1833 they removed to what was then known as the Black Hawk purchase in the territory of Iowa, and settled near the town of Iowaville in Van Buren county. On this farm she remained until the time of her death.

She was the mother of 12 children, six sons, and six daughters, who are all living except the oldest daughter, who died a good many years ago, leaving two children for Mother Nelson to care for, which she raised as well as her own children, both marrying under her roof. One of them died soon afterward, leaving an infant boy which Mother Nelson took charge and at her death was quite an interesting member of the old household; thus giving her parental instruction to the third generation.

Descending from one of the oldest families of VA. (her maiden name being Hagler) who were noted for their moral worth and sterling integrity, and while Mother Nelson never belonged to any church organization, she nevertheless possessed all the attributes of a christian, kind-hearted, and motherly to all around her. They began their married life in very limited circumstances, and having a large family to care for, gave her but little opportunity to cultivate the mind, but whatever she may have lacked in that direction, she more than balanced in her indomitable energy and perservance to provide for her family, and in this she thorougly fulfilled the scriptures where it says, "Blessed are they who provide for their own household." Few women have undergone more real hardships of frontier life, but she had the satisfaction of seeing all her children grown up with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Notwithstanding the condition of the roads which were such as to be almost impassable, there was a very large concourse of people at the funeral. She was loved by all her neighbors. And Uncle Jonathan Nelson, as he is universally called, and all the family, have the entire sympathy of all who know them, in their sad bereavement.

Kind and sympathetic friends carefully bore the remains away and loving hands will plant the myrtle and the rose on the mound where lies the dearest of all earthly beings--A mother. A.H.
