1990 FE 2Two Douds boys, 5, die in crash
DOUDS - Two 5-year-old boys were killed Thursday afternoon on the way home from classes at a Christian school in a two-vehicle accident on a gravel road south of Douds.
Brandon Campbell and Austin Boyd, son and foster son of Phil and Katherine Campbell, were pronounced dead at the accident scene by Dr. J.T. Worrell, Van Buren County medical examiner.
The boys were in the back seat passengers in a car driven by their aunt, Shelly May, 22, of Douds. The car collided with a pickup truck driven by Phillip Davis, 17, of Douds, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department.
May and the mother of the boys passenger Katherine Campbell, 37, were injured in the crash.
May was listed in critical condition late this morning at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and Mrs. Campbell was in fair condition. She had been upgraded from serious condition Thursday night.
The accident occurred on a gravel road 2 1/2 miles southwest of Douds as freezing rain was failing.
The eastbound 1980 Honda driven by May met a westbound 1979 GMC pickup truck driven by Davis at the crest of a hill, the sheriff's office reported.
The auto apparently tried to swerve and the pickup struck the car just behind the driver's door and "literally tore the car in two," according to the sheriff's office. The boys apparently were thrown to the ground from the impact.
May and Mrs. Campbell both were transported by ambulance to Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua. They were treated there then transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City by ambulance.
Davis and a 17-year-old passenger in the pickup, Brian Campbell - also the son of Phil and Katherine Campbell - were treated for minor injuries at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital and released.
Davis and Brian Campbell were on an errand to a sawmill for the Campbell family.
Investigation into the accident continues by the Van Buren County sheriff's office and the Iowa State Patrol.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds.
Campbell is pastor at Bethel Worship Center in Douds.
