I wanted to post this as it does mention Van Buren County. Thought it would be a good post to have since it is Veteran's Day.

This is from an ancestor and was found in one of the many boxes of letters and other documents we have.

The writer is also a Civil War Veteran.

What Cheer, Iowa
November 11, 1918

Dear Albert,

This morning about half past four the fire bell rang and in a short time the Pottery whistle blew and the church bells rang and are still at it, and it it is near 10 o'clock. Which is a token that America and other parts of the world will be safe places to live.
Just before the fire bell rang, I dreamt that I heard the fire bell ring at Eldon, 4 miles from where I had lived in Van Buren Co., and that I saw the heat of the fire reflect on the sky. I told my sister the bell was ringing.
As I woke up and turned myself over, the bell at the town hall, in What Cheer, was ringing not to denote a fire but the peace of the world.

Here is to luck and prosperity.

Jim Kimble

***James Kimble was a Civil War veteran.
