Long-time Van Buren recorder dies

Shirley Seip, for 30 years Van Buren's trusted County Recorder, died March 3, 1987 at the Van Buren County Hospital.

She was pronounced dead at ?:55 in the afternoon.

Seip's death shocked the county, and especially, the courthouse workers she worked with for so long.

"It's really shocking," said auditor Jon Finney, "She was just a good, good person."

Seip, who was 65, was born in Bonaparte and raised in Mt. Zion. She attended grade school in Mt. Sterling and went to Keosauqua High School. After graduating there, she attended Parsons College in Fairfield for a year and spent a year at the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport.

She worked in Des Moines for a few years, then returned to Van buren County, where she worked in the rations office during World Wat II.

She first ran for Recorder in 1956 and was the Recorder before retiring in Nov., 1986.

She has been credited by associated for bringing records up to date, and saving them.

"She had the foresight to laminate the old records," Finney said when interviewed in October, 1986.

And will probably be her legacy, her associates say, because years from now people will still be able to look back in the records and find them in as good as shape as possible.

A complete obituary will appear in next week's paper.

The Register joins with the many who will miss Shirley Seip.
