John Murphy is my great, great, great grandfather; this property is south of Highway 2, south of Thompson Cemetery on Robin Ave. in Van Buren Cty., IA. John Murphy was born in Ireland about 1796 and died in Van Buren Cty., IA. He and his first wife Margaret Mullen also born in Ireland had two sons, Thomas Benton Murphy and Cornelius Murphy. Thomas B. Murphy and Martha Jane Carter Murphy are my great, great grandparents and are buried in Vernon Cemetery; Corneluis and Emily Rabb Murphy are buried in Thompson Cemetery on Robin Ave. John Murphy's second wife is Ellen (Boyer) Murphy. John Murphy was a steamboat captain on the Mississippi River, plying his boat between Cairo, Il and New Orleans, LA. When the U.S. Government opened the Black Hawk Indian purchase of land for settlement, John bought a claim located between Farmington and Bonaparte, Iowa (which is described above). John and Ellen (Boyer) Murphy had 10 children: Julia; Elizabeth; Ellen; John; James; Margaret; Samuel; Mary; Andrew; William. The first five were born in Missouri, the last five in Van Buren Cty., Iowa. Ellen (Boyer) Murphy is buried in Thompson Cemetery, but there are no records that John Murphy is buried there. The information that has been available is the records never went back that far, so if he is buried in Thompson Cemetery by his second wife Ellen (Boyer) Murphy, there are no records to prove it. If anyone has any information on John Murphy, please contact me.
