THE MILTON HEARLD

MILTON, IOWA, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1924

MILTON TEAM WAS VICTORIOUS
Bloomfield High School Game But Unable to Stop Milton's Rushes and Passes on Thanksgiving

The Milton high school football team, accompanied by hundreds of fans, the Pulaski band and a drum corps, invaded Bloomfield Thanksgiving and when the good-natured bunch of visitors left, the Bloomfield scalp went with them. From ten o'clock until time for the game, gaily decorated cars bearing the scarlet and black colors of Milton came into Bloomfield from the east and by the time the game was called there were fully as many Milton spectators as there were Bloomfield rooters. Milton won the game 29 to 0.

Despite the furious rivalry between the two schools and teams, not one piece of unsportsmanlike conduct was evident, either on the part of the teams or any of the spectators. Bloomfield fought hard on every play but was unable to get away with much against the heavier and more experienced players from Milton. Although defeated, Bloomfield should feel proud of her team. They lost to a better team but never let up. The game was won by the Miltonites on straight football and a number of well executed passes which the Bloomfield warriors were unable to solve.

The Milton team claims the chamionship of southeastern Iowa and we understand that they are willing to defend this title against any team which is willing to take them on in a post-season game.

For Milton, the outstanding star was Captain Gilfillan at full back and he was ably supported by the back field. The Milton line was good on most every defensive play but looked weak against Bloomfield's spread plays. The story might have been different had Bloomfield used this spread more and bucked the line less.

For Bloomfield, the work of Tompkins at right guard, Grant at left tackel and Hill at full back showed to best advantage. The fact that the entire team played hard should not be forgotten. The lineup was:
Bloomfield -- Holt, Cruikshank, Tompkins, Porter, Walker, Grant, Harper, Anderson, Horn (Capt.), Turner, Hill.

Milton-- Boyd, Humbert, Erzinger, Peterson, Murphy, Richard, Gould, Tackleson, Rentzel, McDaniel, Gilfillan (Capt.)

Score -- Milton 29: Bloomfield 0
Referee -- Casey, Melrose; Umpire, Brown, Troy; Headlinesman Schlegel, Bloomfield.

Six high school football teams of Iowa went through the season without defeat or a tie score. They were:
Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Carroll, Milton and Wapello. Milton easily won the southeastern Iowa Title. Hurrah for Milton.

This newspaper article is in an old family scrapbook in my possession. One of the Milton players, Dale Murphy is my uncle; posted for those who might have an interest.
