Sensational Elopement at Farmington.

FARMINGTON, Jan. 13 - The report that Ms. Edna Masters, one of our accomplished and handsome young ladies, had eloped with Thomas Pettifer, a young man who is in every way unworthy of her, has caused a sensation here. They took their departure Saturday morning and there are now sad hearts in Miss Edna's former home, which was all that anyone could desire. It is said the young man has a wife and child somewhere in Illinois. Whether this is true, we are unable to say, but he is an all-around sport, and be remembered by many PRESS readers as the man to have have assisted in “doing up” W. E. Bowman, of this place for a snug sum in a foot race at Fairfield last fall. It was ever thus.

Miss Edna Masters, Farmington eloped one day last week with Thomas Pettifore whom the Farmington HERALD says is a sprinter by profession, and all around sport, and go as you please adventurer, deadbeat and loafer. He was one of the parties who created a sensation at Fairfield last fall by mulching one Bowman and other sports out of large sums in a foot race scheme. The couple went to Burlington where they were married by Rev. Salter of the Congressional church. From there they went to St. Louis and their whereabouts since is not known. Miss Masters was a society belle, daughter of the proprietor of the Farmington flouring mill and has been frequently seen in this city and on the trains while acting as soliciting agent for the Farmington Herald. The man Pettifore had a wife and two children.

We quote the above from the Milton Herald. The Herald is badly mistaken in one respect, Miss Masters has never been in the employ of the Farmington Herald.
