Samuel Slaughter and Descendants
Samuel Slaughter, who was the husband of Joseph Norris' oldest daughter, Mary, was born in Fanquier Co, Virginia, in 1897, and came with his father, Henry Slaughter, to Coshocton Co. Ohio, in 1812.
With his wife and five young daughters, he came to Lee Co., Iowa, 1839 to join the Joseph Norris family in the wilderness then surrounding Farmington.
On their journey across Illinois about fifty miles east of the Mississippi river, one of their horses died. Samuel provided fuel for his wife and children, then mounted the remaining horse and rode to Farmington through a trackless waste of horse high prairie grass, crossing the river at Ft. Madison. He borrowed a horse from his father-in-law, and retraced his journey to his waiting family, whom he found safe. However, it had been a nerve wrecking time for the brave wife who had reason to fear Indians, renegades and wild beasts, and had known no rest, day or night, in her solicitude for her children.
These brave pioneers are buried in the McDaniel cemetery.
The names of Samuel Slaughter's descendants living within a radius of ten miles of Farmington at this time are as follows: Mrs. Ada Kehl, daughter and grandchildren; Ezra Kelley and son; Charley Kelley, two sons and daughter; Mrs. Grover Rhody and children; Mrs. Jake Hols and children; Raymond Grimm and daughter; Harley Grimm and sons; Sam Merrick and son; Ruth Merrick and Dorothy Merrick; Mrs. Lucetia Carr and children; Bert Slaughter and sons; James Slaughter; Howard Knapp and daughter. Webster and Nora Barbara Burrier and Mrs. Flora Cummings.
