CHILD AND WOMAN SAVED BY TERRIER

(The following clipping from a recent issue of the Des Moines Sunday Register has additional interest to Van Buren county people because Ray Warner is the son of Mrs. Vina Warner of Stockport, and Mrs. Warner is a niece of Mrs. Will Marriott of Bentonsport. tonsport.)

"Dinky," a toy Boston terrier, was the heroine Sunday in the family of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Spry, 1146 Fifty-eighth St.

She was credited with saving the lives of the Sprys' one and a half years old daughter, Barbara, and Mrs. Ray W. Warner, 728 Eighth St., Mrs. Spry's mother.

Mrs. Warner was caring for Barbara at the Spry home when fire broke out early Sunday.

Dinky was in the living room, where the fire apparently started. She clawed at the bed and whined to awaken Mrs. Warner, taking a nap until the baby's parents returned from an inter-sorority dance.

Mrs. Warner at first ignored the dog's whining and scratching, thinking Dinky wanted to climb in the bed, or wanted to be let outside.

Then Dinky started barking, and Mrs. Warner arose to see what was wrong.

She found the house aflame. The nursery was full of smoke.

Throwing a blanket around the baby, she dashed out to safety. Because of the hour, she ran some distance with the baby before she found a home where she could telephone for the fire department.

Almost the entire interior of the house was badly damaged. Cause of the fire was unknown.

Spry, staying temporarily with Mr. and Mrs. Warner, said he could not estimate the total damage to his home, "but I know I have a million-dollar dog!"
