From the Lewis County Courthouse at Monticello, MO a Van Buren County related marriage.

This is the marriage mentioned in the 1878 VBC History story where Aaron Word Harlan helped the couple elope by canoe to be married in MO. I can't explain the Gooding/Goodwin name difference. John Goodwin was associated with David Allen Ely of Ely's Ford. Elijah Purdom, the father who did not approve of the marriage, was on the claim just down river from Ely's Ford. As I recall, Elizabeth died the next year and is buried in Purdom Cemetery but with Elizabeth Purdom on her stone.

I William Bedell an acting Justice of the Peace do certify that I solemnized the rites of matrimony between John Gooding & Elizabeth Purdon of lawful age on the 26th day of September last. Given under my hand, this 3rd day October 1836.
