Shepherd 50th Wedding Anniversary - 1903

Henry Clay Shepherd - Known to everyone as Uncle Henry and Aunt Hannah, Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Shepherd celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary. About 60 guests (all relatives) a number of whom were present 50 years ago. It was a beautiful day September 17, 1863 when Henry Clay Shepherd here led to the marriage altar Miss Hannah Stull. After 50 years of wedded bliss on September 17, 1913 after the guests assembled, the groom led to the altar his bride of 50 years ago in the same room. Miss Nellie Marriot of Vernon took pictures of the guests and separate ones of the bride and groom and all their children (3 in number). No deaths ever visited their family. The children present were: John W. Shepherd, wife and granddaughter, Thelma of Chester, MT; George N. Shepherd of Cooperstown, ND (whose wife not present because of illness) and Mrs. R. R. Chaney who lives next to them. From away were: Mrs. A. W. Jackson of Ottumwa (the only living sister of Mrs. Shepherd); Rev. Edward Hollow and wife of Ottumwa; David Stull and wife of County Line, IA; Thomas Creath and family of Eldon; James Stull and family; Amos Watts and family; Albert Gould and family, all living near Birmingham, IA; Mr. and Mrs. Alice Heaton of Big Mound, IA; L. A. McCracken and family of Bonaparte; Otto and Joe McCracken and families and Mrs. Fremont Franklin; Samuel Watts and family, all of the immediate neighborhood; Mrs. H. M. Shepherd of Wyoming, IL; Mrs. E. Chaney of Pierceville. Henry Clay Shepherd was born in St. Louis, MO on March 7, 1839 and on April 4, 1839 landed with his parents in Washington Twp., Van Buren Co. where he has resided ever since. Hannah Stull was born in Guernsey Co., OH in 1846 and came to IA when 6 years of age. All departed wishing Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd many happy returns of their wedding day. They were recipients of many beautiful presents and $2500 in gold. (This could be $25.00 in gold. Believe we have a picture of this event. He died 1922. F-Bentonsport Cemetery, Bentonsport.
